PhD research

Since it’s beginning PAR and its preceding institutes were engaged in forward-looking research projects in housing, planning and building in the developing world. The major current research focus is urban governance and its linkage to space. All concluded projects have been documented and published (generally in more than one version and publication) - a selection of resulting publications are being cited in the sub-pages.New projects fall into two categories: those already being funded and executed, and other in the stage of application for funding. A third category are PhD research projects, which normally do not obtain funding on its own, although the researchers may obtain a personal research grant.

Abstract:

The main objective of the research project is to develop urban and architecture strategies for adapting to climate changes and to minimize impacts that increase climate change in the context of the megacity Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in the Southern Part of Vietnam.

The spatial level of the individual building offers enormous potential for achieving sustainable environmental design. The intelligent design and planning decisions can permit a more economical resource use, longer life span of buildings and a reduction of the environmental impact. The efficiency of urban structures at the neighbourhood scale is affected directly by the form and design of buildings

Abstract:

The second half of the 20th century saw the rate of violence soar dramatically in many Sub-Saharan cities. Crime and the subsequent fear of it have had a severe impact on the quality of life in many places, limiting public life to the daylight hours, leading to a boom in private security services for those who can afford it, and as is often the case, leaving the poor most vulnerable and unprotected. Public authorities were largely overburdened when it came to tackling the issue. Yet interestingly, local communities, businesses and individuals have developed (and applied) a wide range of bottom-up strategies to cope with the problem. Unfortunately most of these local approaches, whether traditional or contemporary, remain invisible for a wider public. This research project, therefore, seeks to investigate, conceptualise and transfer successful community-based crime prevention strategies. Focusing in particular on spatial interventions, it will explore their relevance for planning and design disciplines. Above all, the project is aimed at nurturing local research capacities in the countries of the respective African partner institutions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The research proposal aims at elaborating and guiding urban development approaches through participatory governance practices. These processes must be embedded in the cultural and political context of their specific location but at the same time they must offer, or permit, general conclusions that are relevant for replication in other upcoming mega cities. By definition, these governance practices will embrace all affected stakeholders in the community (civil and voluntary sectors, businessmen and public authorities), and must be socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Focus will be given to adequate preventive measures suitable to avoid the emergence of those problems typically associated with currently known mega cities.
