Semester Focus: Managing rapid Urbanization in the South.
Most countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America experience a much
more rapid increase in their population compared to more steady
development that marked the formation of European cities. Therefore,
conventional wisdom of urban planning professions does not appear
adequate for countries of the South, and innovative approaches need
to be developed and applied. This lecture series introduces typical
phenomena of urban development in these countries and discusses
alternative experiences in dealing with the arising needs. Topics to
be addressed include, among others:
Concepts of city and regional development in the South
Upgrading: Informal settlements and their perspectives for
improvement
Shelter issues and problem solving strategies
Urban violence and conflict management
Spacial/social segregation: slums, ghettos and gated communities
Participatory planning and 'good' urban governance
Land tenure, zoning regulations and legalization opportunities
Local architecture and cultural identity
Urban - rural balance and interlinkages
Ecologically intelligent urban infrastructure in Megacities
