Prof. Dr. Kosta Mathéy  & guests

Room:                 Lecture theatre 91,
Credits:               2 CP, with exercise 3CP.

Details:

Most urban areas in the South come into existence without previous design, and those who are planned are not necessarily better, though different. Much can be learnt from spontaneous formation of urban space and facilities, but complete lack of planning demands a high (social and financial) cost in the long run. This lecture series introduces a number of basic rules to be observed in the planning of cities in the South. The focus lies on the management of space, whereas parallel lecture series cover technical and social aspects of urban development.
The lecture is jointly given by Prof. Kosta Mathéy (PAR, TUD) and Prof. Maria Elena Martín, visiting professor from the Instituto Superior Politécnico José Antonio Echeverría in Havana, Cuba. Additional guest lecturers will be invited on a case-to-case basis.

Topics to be covered, among others, include:
- Urban planning strategies – periods and fashions
- Approaches to valorize public and open space
- The land question – a never ending story
- The Latin American City, origins and variations
- Community development and micro governance
- Site planning, Traps and hints
- Urban Violence Prevention
- Townscape and streetscape
- Slum Upgrading and Urban Renewal
- Preservation of Urban Heritage Values
Participants requiring a mark for the attendance of the lecture series may do the exercise (replacing the exam) at the end of the semester.

Contents:
The design of slum-upgrading projects as well as for new urban areas in countries of the South has to comply with urgent infrastructure needs more than anything else. It goes without saying that European standards tend to be climatically and culturally problematic, apart from the financial constraints which stand against city-wide implementation of the same. This rotating lecture
series by professors of the faculty of building engineering (FB 13) and invited experts transmits the basic knowledge on mobility, water supply, sewage treatment, waste water and solid waste solutions that each urban planner should be acquainted with.

Topics to be covered include:
- Low-tech and decentralized water supply & management systems
- Regional water catchment and conservation strategies
- Flood prevention and drainage concerns
- Shallow Sewer systems and similar low-cost technologies
- Biological sewage treatment plants
- Health conscious in house sanitation alternatives
- Biogas and other local energy provision alternatives
- Low-income waste collection and management systems
- Road and neighbourhood related circulation systems
- Public transportation in countries of the South
