Program:
A vital, mixed-used (public services, schools, kindergarten, commercial areas, sport facilities, food production), reasonably dense, non-generic, public amenity rich, evenhanded choice of housing types, attractive to multiple economic and demographic segments, environment protecting and conservation minded new urban neighborhood for Shanghai. In other words, the studio explores the qualities, programs, planning and design strategies that are necessary to creating good places to live in Shanghai with its substantial growth pressures. The studio intends to find inspiration in the riverbank setting and the adjusted area of the World Expo, the Bund and Pudong financial district. This context might contain the potential to accommodate the changing needs of the urban dweller of the future, as modern societies continue their shift from industrial-based economies to service and lifestyle-based economies and their requirements. The challenge of the studio is to discover this potential and to transform it into a green neighborhood of the future.
